Aromatology is the art and practice of
Aromatic Medicine using essential oils, applied intensively in
therapeutic quantities, through a variety of methods. Widely
used throughout France and other parts of Europe, Aromatology is
more to be considered as 'the big sister' of the "soft English"
approach to Aromatherapy, which almost invariably includes massage
with essential oils diluted in a vegetable oil.
Massage is not always appropriate in many cases,
eg where there is bruising, or where the skin or underlying
bones are broken, but Aromatology enables essential oils to be
applied neat (drenching) to a whole variety of conditions
(where appropriate) without incorporating massage techniques.
Intensive use of essential oils via the
respiratory and digestive interfaces can also yield impressive
results, again without the need for massage. Blends are
created with much greater emphasis on the chemistry of individual
oils, which are then applied via the most appropriate method,
very often involving the client using home treatments on themselves
once assessment has been made in a clinical environment.
Aromatic Medicine aims to use essential oils more in
line with its phytotherapeutic roots (ie, herbalism), thus expanding its use from more than
just a nice, aromatic massage.
